Beaded Wampum Necklace by Elizabeth James-Perry
Elizabeth James-Perry is an Aquinnah Wampanoag artist whose jewelry, weavings, and baskets have been shown in museums throughout New England and the Northwest. James-Perry uses native eastern woodland materials, such as quahog and whelk shells. Each piece is formed of hand-polished and sculpted shells.
Wampum, the Wampanoag word for 'white shell beads', was culturally significant to the eastern Native nations. Wampum was woven into belts and used for ceremonial observances, trade, and record-keeping.
