The cardan, or marine compass, is a nautical instrument, whose use was fundamental in the development of navigation and cartography.
For sailing, when rolling and pitching movements made ordinary compasses unusable, special types were devised. Ship compasses were mounted on gimbal suspension, allowing them to be kept level at all times.
The compass underwent few modifications until the 19th century, when scientists, engineers and navigators improved it considerably.
