Fossil Multiple Varia Parum 2
Multiple Varia Parum Fossil Strandbeest Theo Jansen 2015.046
As the creator of the Strandbeests, Theo Jansen goes through a cycle every year. In winter he is mainly inventing, sketching and building a new beast in his winter studio. In spring there is already some result and he takes them with him to the beach. During the summer Theo continues to test and develop until they behave according to what he had in mind. At the end of the summer he is a bit wiser how these animals can survive the circumstances on the beach in the future, and declare them extinct.
These ‘fossilbeests’ are often given a second life during exhibitions, while others are not. Theo collects parts to re-use them or to label them as fossils.
The fossils come with a certificate of authenticity.

Theodorus Gerardus Jozef Jansen (born 14 March 1948) is a Dutch artist. In 1990, he began building large mechanisms out of PVC that are able to move on their own and, collectively, are entitled, Strandbeest. The kinetic sculptures appear to walk. His animated works are intended to be a fusion of art and engineering. He has said that "The walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds." He strives to equip his creations with their own artificial intelligence so they may avoid obstacles such as the sea, by changing course when detected.
