Gateway Bombay

$14.95
Bombay, India, now renamed Mumbai, is one of the world's most complex and diverse urban centers.  The city is a paradox—home to Asia's largest slum as well as some of the continent's priciest real estate. A number of languages are spoken and several religious practices coexist in this complicated metropolis. Gateway Bombay, the catalogue accompanying the exhibition, is a celebration of the art born of this diversity. The core of the artwork featured in this compelling book is from the Chester and Davida Herwitz collection of contemporary Indian art. Among the artists included are Atul Dodiya, M.F. Husain, Bhupen Khakhar, Nalini Malani, Gieve Patel, and Sudhir Patwardhan.

The publication accompanies the exhibition Gateway Bombay on view at the Peabody Essex Museum from July 14, 2007, through March 1, 2009.

Susan Bean is the former Curator of South Asian and Korean Art at the Peabody Essex Museum.
