Audacious: The Fine Art of Wood from the Montalto Bohlen Collection presents important works from the contemporary wood art collection formed by Robert Bohlen and Lillian Montalto Bohlen of Andover, Massachusetts. The Bohlens have been among the most active collectors and promoters of artistic woodturning over the past couple decades. The one hundred fifty works by ninety-seven international artists in this volume provide an informal and visual survey of many of the most celebrated artists, forms, materials, and techniques used during the past thirty-five years. This publication’s fresh perspective on the medium includes works by some of the founding members of the wood art movement in the United States. The works from the Montalto Bohlen Collection speak eloquently to the artists’ unique relationship with a time-honored yet ever-inspiring material and their ability to turn ordinary wood into audacious works of art.

The publication accompanied the exhibition Audacious: The Fine Art of Wood from the Montalto Bohlen Collection which was on view at the Peabody Essex Museum from February 21 through June 21, 2015.

Dean Lahikainen is The Carolyn and Peter Lynch Curator of American Decorative Art at the Peabody Essex Museum. His publications include In Plain Sight: Discovering the Furniture of Nathaniel Gould and Samuel McIntire: Carving an American Style from the Peabody Essex Museum.

Audacious was awarded the 2015 Printing Industries of New England Award of Excellence and Judges’ Choice Awards.
