Mr. Nobody
Mr. Nobody Chinese Export Porcelain Figure – Jingdezhen, China, 1690s
This “Mr. Nobody” figure is inspired by a celebrated example in the internationally renowned Chinese export porcelain collection of the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM). Crafted in Jingdezhen, China during the 1690s, the figure represents one of the earliest known depictions of a European in Chinese porcelain.
The unusual design portrays Mr. Nobody as a literal “man with no body,” based on a popular English earthenware figure derived from a 16th-century woodcut illustration. The original image appeared in the Elizabethan play Nobody and Somebody, first published in the 1590s, which satirized social class inequality in England.
An exceptional example of late 17th-century Chinese export art, this porcelain figure reflects the cultural exchange between China and Europe during the early global trade era. Ideal for collectors of Chinese porcelain, export ceramics, Asian antiques, and early European decorative arts.
This reproduction of Mr. Nobody stands 9.5" tall. The removable hat acts as a sort of lid for the hollow body! Dimensions: 9.5 x 6.5 x 6 inches.
