PEM Galleries Tie in Yellow
Moshe Safdie's architecture continues to intrigue visitors to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Here, he has created galleries, public spaces, an auditorium, and a first-class renovation of older exhibit areas that speak of the museum's heritage and Salem's history going back hundreds of years.
Once inside the museum, you begin your journey along the spine, which is crowned with a curved gable roof — half glass and half opaque to provide sun control. The roof shapes are engaging, seemingly free-form, but are actually segments of a toroid (essentially, a donut).
These ties were designed using sketches of Safdie's galleries. Though they appear to use simple shapes the design evokes the architectural flavor of Salem and its buildings and houses.
