Spice Dog Hot Sauces
Assorted nautical themed hot sauces for the spicy sailor with discerning taste.
Sailors' Sky "Red sky at night, sailors' delight. Red sky in morning, sailors take warning." This rhyme graced many a sailor's lips as they gazed at a rosy orange sunset. A red sky at night meant smooth sailing come morning. Red sky in the morning, better hold onto something. Flavor Profile: Medium-high heat. Fruit-forward yellow Scotch bonnets and habaneros lead. Notes of pineapple and cinnamon.
#5 Our flagship sauce, the one that started it all. Why #5? It took us five tries to get it just right. Why “everyday”? You can eat it on just about anything, at any time, everyday. Flavor Profile: bright pepper with medium heat
Cure for Scurvy Between 1500 and 1800 scurvy was the leading killer on the seven seas. In 1747 James Lind found that Vitamin C in citrus cured scurvy. In 2020 Spice Dog chefs found that citrus was a cure for bland hot sauce. Flavor Profile: fresh lime and hints of coriander
St. Elmo’s Fire Erasmus of Formia, or St. Elmo, is venerated as the patron saint of sailors. The phenomenon known as St. Elmo’s Fire can warn a ship's crew of an imminent lightning strike by causing a blue glow around mast tips. This glow was considered a good omen, old St. Elmo looking out. Flavor Profile: Medium-high heat. Aji amarillo chilis lead with bright citrus notes and a refreshing finish.
Bayou Scuttle Scuttling is the deliberate sinking of a ship to dispose of abandoned, old, or captured vessels. This vinegar-based sauce is our version of a Louisiana classic. The vinegar and select spices lead for that familiar zing followed by a custom blend of fermented red chilis. Flavor Profile: Medium heat. Fermented chilis, vinegar. Notes of onion and garlic.
Teach’s Beard Captain Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, ruled the seas until his demise in 1718. Blackbeard was known to tie lit fuses into his beard and hair before battle, wreathing his face in thick smoke. Most victims simply surrendered their cargo rather than fight the smoking demon. Flavor Profile: rich and smoky with notes of paprika and nutmeg
