Magnet - Mr. Nobody

As part of his 2012 exhibition at PEM, contemporary artist Michael Lin worked with a Chinese manufacturer to produce several hundred copies of Mr. Nobody, a figure in PEM’s internationally significant collection of Chinese export porcelain. Made in Jingdezhen in the 1690s, Mr. Nobody was one of the first representations in Chinese porcelain of a European. As you can see, Mr. Nobody quite literally has no body. He was based on an English earthenware figure, which was in turn inspired by a woodcut image in an Elizabethan play. Published in the 1590s, the play Nobody and Somebody satirized class inequality in England.
