On Dangerous Ground
A robust yet accessible history of US involvement in the South China Sea. Gregory B. Poling examines over a century of American engagement in the world's most complex maritime disputes, tracing how US interests in freedom of the seas and Asian alliances—particularly with the Philippines—have shaped policy. Balancing the China-centric narrative, this comprehensive account reveals decisions made across Washington, Beijing, Manila, and Southeast Asian capitals, offering essential context for understanding US national security strategy in one of the world's most critical waterways.
