Ornament - East India Marine Hall

Handmade East India Marine Hall Ornament – Zardozi Embroidery

This handmade East India Marine Hall ornament is crafted using the traditional art of Zardozi embroidery, a centuries-old decorative technique passed down through generations of skilled artisans. Historically associated with royal garments and ceremonial textiles, Zardozi embroidery traditionally incorporates metallic gold thread, intricate hand stitching, and jeweled embellishments.

The ornament celebrates East India Marine Hall in Salem, Massachusetts, the historic headquarters of the East India Marine Society. Founded in 1799 by 22 Salem sea captains and international traders, the society established the oldest continuously operating collecting museum in the United States, now part of the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM).

Designed by architect Thomas Waldron Sumner, a protégé of renowned Salem architect Samuel McIntire, East India Marine Hall is a landmark example of Greek Revival architecture. Constructed from locally sourced Cape Ann granite, the iconic two-story antebellum building remains the historical and cultural centerpiece of the museum.

Perfect for collectors of museum memorabilia, maritime history, Salem history, architectural ornaments, and handcrafted textile art, this ornament beautifully combines traditional craftsmanship with American cultural heritage.

St. Nicolas specializes in bespoke, handmade decorations. For over 25 years, St. Nicolas has worked with a small charity in Thailand and India that helps disadvantaged rural women find work in their community, sewing decorations at home. Their handmade decorations are crafted using the traditional method of Zardozi embroidery, a highly skilled technique handed down from generation to generation that traditionally uses gold wires and jewels to embellish robes.
