Scarf Devils and Angels "The Blanket Scarf"
The typographical prominence of ANGELS and DEVILS in the titles of these two 17th-century books hints at their authors' intentions: Benjamin Camfield presented proof of the existence of angels in 1678 to counter a growing disbelief in the spiritual world. Cotton Mather defended the 1692 Salem Witch Trials and its reliance on the unprovable ("spectral") evidence cited by witchcraft accusers that was based solely on the visions of the afflicted.
