Yin Yu Tang: Preserving Chinese Vernacular Architecture
Yin Yu Tang is the first house brought, in its entirety, from China to the United States. Its conservation and installation at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, is a landmark in the history of international preservation. Not only have the building and its contents been preserved as artifacts; Chinese culture has been brought halfway around the world, expanding the opportunities for people in the Western Hemisphere to learn about Chinese architecture, art, and history.
Yin Yu Tang is a typical example of a Chinese merchant's house from the second half of the 1700s. With the blessings of the family, the house was moved here as a result of a cultural exchange program between the Peabody Essex Museum and local Chinese county and municipal government authorities.
