Zen No Zen: Aspects of Noguchi’s Sculptural Vision
The inaugural exhibition of the temporary location of The Noguchi Museum (during the renovation of the Museum from 2001–04), Zen No Zen: Aspects of Noguchi’s Sculptural Vision, explored the influence of Zen Buddhism on Noguchi’s work. This accompanying publication features an essay by curator Bonnie Rychlak and photographs of works included in the show.
Among the subjects examined by Rychlak were Noguchi’s visits to Buddhist temples during a 1931 trip to Japan, and his relationship and travels with Saburo Hasegawa, beginning in 1950. The latter would also become the focus of a major, three-city exhibition in 2019 entitled Changing and Unchanging Things: Noguchi and Hasegawa in Postwar Japan
